After considerable discussion about the pros and cons of recycling, a Boulder neighborhood association almost decided to use compostable plates at this summer’s pot luck. However, just as they were about to start writing the algorithm to determine how many compostable forks were needed relative to spoons, neighborhood leader and NIST Ph.D. engineer Jim Anderson questioned whether the embodied energy used in the production of the plates exceeded the environmental benefits from a GHG perspective, and the plan was put on hold, pending further discussion.
Meanwhile in Texas, the contents of recycling bins and trash cans were dumped in the same trucks to save trips.
