Net-Zero Urbanism: The Geos Neighborhood Story

Join architects Michael Tavel and David Kahn as they present their innovative Geos Neighborhood, expected to break ground later this year in Arvada, CO to create America’s largest net-zero energy neighborhood.
The 280-unit, urban mixed-use neighborhood integrates numerous sustainable systems into a compact urban layout, producing as much or more energy on-site than is consumed. Urban density is optimized with passive solar orientation, and stormwater management is integrated so that it passively irrigates a hierarchy of private and public landscapes. Civic space is integrated with a variety of natural processes, placing people in direct
contact with nature and supporting a variety of opportunities for local agriculture. The net-zero energy architecture will utilize “passive house” building strategies.
Geos has won seven design awards including a 2009 National Honor award for Analysis and Planning from the American Society of Landscape Architects. Tavel and Kahn will review how the project team went about their research and process, and illustrate the design, its key concepts, and strategies.
Michael Tavel AIA and David Kahn ALSA have collaborated for over 20 years on research, teaching and professional projects. In the 1990s they created and taught the UCD summer study abroad program in Prague, Czech Republic. Tavel and Kahn have lectured nationally and internationally about the interface of urban design and natural processes and have worked together on several award-winning projects in Colorado.
