Neighbors Protest Project for the Second Homeless

Second homeless couple

Downtown Boulder residents packed a standing-room-only City Council meeting last night to speak out against a proposed condominium complex for the chronically second homeless.

“We care about the second homeless, but we’ve done our fair share,” said Dawn Slade, who lives a block from the site where developers want to build sixteen luxury units for occasional use by the moderately wealthy.  “We have to deal with them every day as they go to and from the St. Julien, waiting for the airport shuttle and littering the area with used Peppercorn bags.  It’s time for other parts of Boulder to share the burden.”

Kristof Platten, who lives across from the proposed site, said he already worried about the safety of his two small children because of the concentration of second homeless in the area.  “They mill around for hours while they wait for Brasserie Ten Ten to open.  I’d like to let my kids play outside, but I just don’t want to take the chance.  I’d never forgive myself if something were to happen.”

Developer Stephen Tebo, whose company is proposing the upscale complex, defended the proposal before council as “the right thing” for the second homeless.  Besides, he pointed out, technically “once they have a second home, they’re no longer second homeless.”
