Boulder climate scientist Neil Newhouse has noticed that his family has had meatloaf for dinner each week for the past two weeks and, based on his observations, is predicting that they will have meatloaf again this week. Newhouse, who specializes in trend analysis, enjoys collecting data.

His wife, Abby Newhouse, would neither confirm nor deny the prediction, though she did say, “I wish Neil would quit trying to find a trend in everything,” adding, “Last week, he spent 5 hours trying to pin down the distribution of Ms and Ws in a bag of M&Ms.”
