{"id":1190,"date":"2010-04-20T21:05:03","date_gmt":"2010-04-21T03:05:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.boulderblueline.org\/?p=1190"},"modified":"2010-05-11T14:10:11","modified_gmt":"2010-05-11T20:10:11","slug":"council-takes-bold-step-towards-decarbonization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.boulderblueline.org\/?p=1190","title":{"rendered":"Council Takes Bold Step towards Decarbonization&#8211;UPDATED"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the City\u2019s Xcel franchise agreement expiring in August 2010, City Council unanimously agreed at their April 13 Study Session to hold off on renewing a long-term agreement with Xcel and to instead extend the franchise agreement for a year or two. \u00a0\u00a0 Although this nod of agreement was not an official City Council vote, it was, none the less, an important and historic occasion. \u00a0The City\u2019s intent is to partner with Xcel to meet Boulder\u2019s goals regarding reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and stabilizing future electric rates for Boulder residents.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1202\" style=\"width: 609px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.boulderblueline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/valmont.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1202\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1202 \" title=\"valmont\" src=\"http:\/\/www.boulderblueline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/valmont.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"305\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1202\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy Roger Wolvington<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Negotiations are currently underway between the City and Xcel and there could be an agreement by the end of May. \u00a0The objectives of the negotiations are to address meeting the City\u2019s Climate Action Plan goals and to supply Xcel with a \u201claboratory\u201d to learn how to deliver a high level of renewable energy to its customers and make full use of its Smart Grid.\u00a0 City Manager Jane Brautigam recommended that, in the event that there is no agreement, the City extend the franchise agreement for at least one year so that the City and Xcel could continue negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>The City Manager also pointed out that the City has focused discussions more on the energy demand side than on the supply side so it is time to have a long term energy strategy discussion.
