Allyn has lived in Boulder for most of her life, and has been a volunteer member of a number of city boards and commissions, including Planning Board, Landmarks Board, the Boulder Housing Authority (now known as Boulder Housing Partners), and the Boulder County Recycling Authority. She was appointed to the Boulder City Council in 1992 to fill a vacancy, serving through 1997, and is currently a member of the City of Boulder Open Space Board of Trustees, the Board President of Eco-cycle, and a member of the Board of Trustees of Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio.
Allyn currently works as the Chief Operating Officer of ERTH Solutions, a company that has been developing environmental technologies related to processing and upgrading wastewater. Prior to this, she worked in the field of planning, and was the owner and principal of a professional consulting firm, specializing in planning projects related to economic revitalization of historic downtowns.
